Underground Storage Tanks (USTs)

An underground storage tank system (UST) is a tank and any underground piping connected to the tank that has at least 10 percent of its combined volume underground. The federal UST regulations apply only to underground tanks and piping storing either petroleum or certain hazardous substances. Hazardous substance USTs have to meet the same requirements for petroleum USTs concerning correct installation, spill, overfill and corrosion protection, corrective action, and closure.

Tank Tightness Testing With Inventory Control

High Volume UST Sites

With a high volume MPD site, one of the primary problems that arises for inventory control is that dispensers are running while fuel is being delivered. Since the amount of fuel delivered is calculated from the level change in the tank during the delivery, anything pumped out during the delivery interval would not be recorded, creating an error in the delivery equal to the amount sold. Therefore, it is necessary to know what was sold. Dataman's pump monitoring sensor can provide that information which can then be factored into the delivery to give the correct amount. Such errors are directly proportional to the magnitude of sales and are rarely accounted for correctly with manual systems. Dataman's software program collects the necessary information electronically and is therefore much more accurate than just about any other technique. Dataman has successfully done this on sites up to 100K gallons/month throughput in the real world. Success is defined as a fully automated inventory reconciliation which meets USEPA standards of 1% of sales + 130 gallons.
